Health officials report nearly 400,000 cases of the virus in the U.S. and close to 13,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.The grim development comes after New York reported its highest single-day death toll and New Jersey recorded its biggest daily increase in fatalities.

The states governors previously said they were seeing positive trends. They said the events reinforce the need for social distancing.

"I know its hard," New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said, "but we have to keep doing it."

Vice President Mike Pence on Tuesday said that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention could change its guidelines on self-isolation as soon as Wednesday.
