Passenger killed when driver rear-ends commercial potato truck on Interstate 84

PORTLAND, Oregon - On Thursday at about 8:15 pm, Oregon State Police and emergency crew responded to a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 84.

Apparently a Volkswagen Jetta, driven by 20-year-old Jate Frost of Randlett, UT, was traveling eastbound when it rear-ended a commercial vehicle, operated by Ediberto Ramirez Carrillo (31) of Hermiston. Frost had serious injuries and was flown via Life Flight to Kadlec Medical Center in Richland, WA. The right front passenger in the Jetta, 24-year-old bull rider Richard Schleicher of Stockton, OK, was killed. The rear seat passenger in the Jetta, 21-year-old esse Hopper of Magnum, OK had serious injuries and was taken to OHSU in Portland. Ramirez Carrillo was not injured.

All three occupants of the Jetta were contestants at the Pendleton Roundup. The commercial vehicle was fully loaded with potatoes.

Oregon State Police was assisted by Echo Fire Department, Umatilla County Fire District #1, Umatilla County Sheriff's Department, Stanfield Police Department and ODOT.
