On April 21, 2011 at 9:37 p.m., officers of the Salem Police Department responded to the Salem Centre Mall at Liberty St NE and Chemeketa St NE on a report of a suspicious device. A Mall security officer located the device inside of a trash can outside the entrance to the Mall. The Mall was closed at the time. Liberty St NE and Chemeketa St NE were closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic for 2 1/2 hours while the Salem Police Department Bomb Squad were called to the scene.

The device was remotely removed from the trash can and rendered safe at the scene by Bomb Squad Technicians. A preliminary examination revealed that the device was not an improvised explosive device. An investigation is continuing to identify who placed the device into the trash can.
