PORTLAND, Oregon - 21 year old Daniel Armaugh Butts is accused of killing Rainier police chief Ralph Painter. He was shot in the head on Wednesday during a struggle at a Rainier car stereo shop. The chief leaves behind a wife and seven children, the youngest being 7 years old.

Police responded to The Sound Authority stereo store yesterday morning. Butts was able to get Painter's service weapon and shoot him in the head. The chief was pronounced dead after being airlifted to a hospital.

Law enforcement vehicles escorted the body of Chief Painter from Clackamas and returned him to Rainier. Several communities flew American flags at half-staff to honor the Chief.

Rainier police Sgt. Greg Griffith was named interim chief of Rainier.

The suspects father, Mike Butts, expressed his condolences to the Painter's family on Wednesday, saying he believes his son suffered some kind of breakdown because mental illness runs in the family.
