Driver Identified in March 8 Fatal Crash on Glenn L. Jackson Bridge

PORTLAND, Oregon - The driver of the Toyota was identified by the Medical Examiner as Cecilia R. Hao, 70, of Vancouver, Washington. Her family has been notified of her death.

No other information is available. The crash remains under investigation.

On March 8, 2021, at about 1:11 a.m., Portland Police officers responded to the report of a crash on northbound I-205, about mid-span on the Glenn Jackson Bridge. Just north of Government Island, officers arrived to find a Toyota RAV 4 fully engulfed in flames, and a Chrysler 300 against the eastern concrete barrier. There was a debris field between the two vehicles. There was one occupant in each vehicle, both died at the scene.

The Portland Police Major Crash Team investigation revealed the Chrysler was travelling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-205, the Toyota was travelling northbound. The cars collided head on.

The occupant of the Chrysler has been identified as 21-year-old Morise Messiah Smith. The crash is still under investigation. Additional information, including the identity of the driver of the Toyota, will be released at the direction of the Major Crash Team.

On Monday, March 8, 2021 at 1:10 a.m., North Precinct officers were dispatched to a report of a crash involving two vehicles on northbound I-205, on the Glenn L. Jackson Bridge. When officers arrived, they found one vehicle fully engulfed in flames. The drivers of both vehicles have died at the scene.

The Portland Police Major Crash Team is responding to conduct an investigation. If anyone has information about this incident, they're asked to call police non-emergency at 503-823-3333 and reference incident number 21-62137.

During the investigation, northbound I-205 is closed from Northeast Airport Way over the Glenn L. Jackson Bridge to WA-14 in Washington. This is expected to take multiple hours.

The PIO is not responding to the scene. More information will be released when appropriate to the investigation.
