PORTLAND, Ore. — Visitors to the Oregon Zoo may soon get a peek at its most famous resident -- 5-year-old Nora the polar bear.

While the zoo's new Polar Passage habitat won't officially open to the public until later this spring, starting April 1 the zoo is opening the walkways around it.

But Nora sightings will be at her discretion, as she might prefer to stay in her den.

"Visitors might see quite a bit of her in the coming weeks, but it's all up to Nora," Amy Cutting, who oversees the zoo polar bear area, said in a news release Wednesday. "We know everyone is excited to see her, and we really appreciate their patience and understanding."

Zookeepers say she's most active before 11 a.m., however.

The beloved bear first arrived at the Oregon Zoo as a 10-month-old cub in 2016. A year later she was moved to the Hogle Zoo in Utah. She arrived back in Portland last month.

The zoo says another female polar bear will be added to the polar bear habitat this fall.

Polar bears' natural habitat in the Arctic is being threatened by climate change, making it harder for them to catch their main source of food: seals.
