Deputies arrived at the convenience store within minutes -- but the suspect, who was reportedly armed with a pistol, had already fled the scene in a white four-door sedan.
Deputies interviewed witnesses at the store. They learned the suspect had entered the store and asked the clerk for a few items. After the clerk got the items, the suspect produced a pistol and demanded money. However, other customers walked in the store at that time -- so the suspect ended up grabbing the items the clerk had originally retrieved for him and ran out of the store without any money.
Deputies reviewed store video surveillance, and a Sheriff's Office CSI technician responded to process the scene for additional evidence.
Patrol deputies continued to work the case throughout the night -- and learned where the suspect was likely staying.
On Monday Oct. 26, Sheriff's office detectives picked up where the deputies left off.
Detectives contacted Vincent Lee Joseph Melton, 27, of Canby, at the Budget Inn, located at 19240 SE McLoughlin Blvd. in Gladstone.
Mr. Melton was placed under arrest for a misdemeanor warrant (Driving While Suspended out of the City of Canby). Melton was then transported to and lodged at the Clackamas County Jail, where he was additionally booked on charges of Robbery I and Theft III.
Detectives obtained a search warrant for Melton's hotel room and seized evidence of the robbery.
A booking photo is attached. Bail was set at $261,500. Complete booking info is here: https://web3.clackamas.us/roster/#inmates
