On 3/21/2020 at 3:28 pm, McMinnville Officers and McMinnville Fire Department EMS responded to a crash involving a single motor vehicle and the operator of a motor assisted scooter in the 2100 block of NE Lafayette Avenue.

Initial investigation reveals that the driver of a 2003 Nissan Xterra, Luis Vargas Garcia, 23, of McMinnville, was exiting the driveway of Redwood Commons Apartments onto Lafayette Avenue. The operator of the motor assisted scooter, Karen Hoover, 80, of McMinnville, was travelling north on the sidewalk of Lafayette Avenue. A collision between the Nissan and the motor assisted scooter occurred where the sidewalk crosses the driveway access. Hoover was ejected from her scooter and suffered serious injuries. Hoover was transported by ambulance to an awaiting Life Flight helicopter at the Cascade Steel heliport. Hoover was flown to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center, where her current status is serious but stable. Hoover's dog suffered fatal injuries in the crash, and has been released to family members. Vargas Garcia and his passenger were not injured.
