oday, Multnomah County District Attorney Rod Underhill announced that 64-year-old Reza Chehrazi Mardani made his first court appearance in Multnomah County Circuit Court.

Mardani is charged with murder, attempted aggravated murder and unlawful use of a weapon.

The charging document alleges that the defendant, on or about January 17, 2019, in Multnomah County, did unlawfully and intentionally cause the death of George Michael Atkeson and attempted to cause the death of Darlene Marie Kelley.

The defendant waived his right to a probable cause hearing. As such, there is no probable cause affidavit.

As previously stated by the Portland Police Bureau, this investigation started on January 17, 2019 when officers assigned to the Portland Police Bureau responded to the report of gunfire at a residence in the 5300 block of Northeast 74th Avenue. Officers and medical personnel arrived in the area and located Mr. Atkeson deceased and Ms. Kelley injured.

An autopsy performed by the Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office determined Mr. Atkeson died of homicidal violence.

A copy of the charging document can be obtained using the Oregon eCourt Information (OECI) system under case number 19CR04482.

The defendant's next court date is set for January 30, 2019 at 9:30 a.m. at the Justice Center, Courtroom #3. A bail hearing has not been scheduled.

This case is being prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Melissa Marrero.

This remains an ongoing investigation and no additional details will be released.

A charging instrument is only an accusation of a crime, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
