PORTLAND, Oregon - 14-year-old Shiloh Hampton died at an area hospital this morning, Wednesday April 20, 2011, at approximately 8:20 a.m. The Oregon State Medical Examiner will be conducting an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death. Police continue to investigate the shooting.

"Any death from gun violence is unacceptable. It's even more tragic for our community when the victim is a 14-year-old," said Mayor Sam Adams. "Shiloh Hampton was loved by his family and friends, and my thoughts and prayers are with them at this time."

Witnesses say they heard several gunshots then saw three suspects running from the area and drove away in a car described as a white, late 80s Mercedes with tinted windows and chrome rims.

According to police, Hampton was at the mall with friends and as they walked to a street corner outside the mall, someone fired several shots into the crowd. Hampton was hit and the rest of his friends ran for cover.

Police believe gang members are involved but have not been able to determine if Hampton was in a gang as well. They're not certain if he was the intended victim.

Anyone with information is urged to call Detective Rico Beniga at (503) 823-0457.
