This afternoon, Monday March 28, 2011, at approximately 12:30 p.m., Portland Police responded to a holdup alarm at Southeast Coin & Jewelry, located at 8115 Southeast Powell Boulevard. Officers arrived in the area and learned that the suspect walked into the shop and sprayed pepper spray inside the store and displayed a handgun before taking an undisclosed amount of cash and collector coins.

Witnesses described that the suspect fled the area on foot then got on a bicycle. An additional witness followed the suspect while talking to 9-1-1 giving updates on the suspect's location. Officers combing the area of Southeast 84th and Stark located the suspect and after the suspect attempted to elude officers on his bicycle, he was taken into custody. Later, when being treated by paramedics for minor injuries, he attempted to run away again, while handcuffed but was quickly stopped by police.

Medical personnel treated the employees for exposure to pepper spray but nobody suffered any serious injuries.

The suspect is an adult male and his name won't be released until the investigation is complete and he is booked into the Multnomah County Jail later tonight.
