SALEM, Oregon - Marion County tax assessor was discovered dead from what police say was a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his Salem home last night, Marion County officials said.

54-year-old Richard Kreitzer was serving his second term as assessor. A friend called police just after 6 PM yesterday. The friend said he talked with Kreitzer earlier in the evening and became concerned when he couldn't find Kreitzer.

Deputies found Kreitzer's body in the backyard and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Chief Deputy Assessor Shawn Beaton has assumed responsibility for the assessor's office until futher notice, a county official said.
