Firefighters fought a large fire, which began in a Portland scrap yard Sunday morning.

Twenty cars and piles of debris broke into heavy blazes at American Compost & Recycling on Columbia Blvd. Firefighters used aerial ladders and poured water over the blazes. Flares shot high into the air before they were finally able to put out the flames.

The main problem was reaching the vehicles in the pile of rubbish. Rescue teams had to move shouldering cars to get at the flames. The problem was so difficult that additional Firefighters had to be called, including Portland Fire & Rescue's rehabilitation truck. The freezing weather made the clean up more difficult and less pleasant.
