PORTLAND - Beginning today, the Oregon Department of Transportation will be using large cannons in an attempt to control huge flocks of starling bird making their home on the Interstate Bridge which connects Vancouver and Northern Oregon.

The starlings are contaminating the bridge with their droppings and anyone traveling on the bridge.

Crews will be using propane-powered cannons to create a loud booming noise. The cannons were originally designed to disturb birds in fruit orchards.

The effort will continue through March 17. The Oregon Department of Transportation will use the cannons on alternating days and times to keep the starlings from developing a pattern of behavior.
