43 year old Alan Steiner, a Clackamas County Sheriff's Office corrections deputy was arrested Friday for assaulting inmate assaulting Gary Willis Baumgardner on Sept. 19. He was arraigned Friday on charges of fourth-degree assault, first-degree official misconduct, harassment and harassing Baumgardner by subjecting him to offensive physical contact.

Baumgardner, 65, of Beaverton was in jail awaiting trial on a drunken driving charge.

The case is part of Sheriff Craig Roberts' effort to improve professionalism in the jail. A ten year veteran, Steiner is on administrative leave.

In June, former corrections deputy Darin Leslie Fox was sentenced to three weeks jail time for having sexual relations with female inmates. In October 2009, Alan Dean Randol was sentenced to eight days for sexual misconduct involving an out-of-custody inmate.

While Steiner did not appear in court Friday, his lawyer entered a plea of not guilty. The next court appearance is scheduled for January 10.
