Relatives of a man who died frozen and starving in a pickup truck in Oregon's Cascade Mountains say they tried to find him for 30 years.
Family members including his children and a brother were stunned to learn of Jerry McDonald's fate last month. They hadn't seen him since he walked out on them three decades ago.
McDonald spent his final 68 days in the vehicle during a brutal winter. An old calendar found in the truck gave a written record of his final days.
Authorities considered the 68-year-old a transient. But nobody gave up looking for him.
Family members say they tried unsuccessfully to send letters through a forwarding program offered by the Social Security Administration.
Son Terry McDonald says his father "just wanted to be by himself."
