SALEM, Oregon - An Oregon State Police trooper who pulled over a driver for a traffic violation got a big surprise when he found five pounds of marijuana in the car Monday morning.
The driver, Michael Melvin, 37, and Darlene Byrd, 25, both from Tacoma, Washington, were arrested on charges of unlawful possession and delivery of a controlled substance. They were stopped in a 1998 Chevrolet Malibu, which was northbound on Interstate 5 around 1 A.M. Monday morning.
A canine found approximately five pounds of marijuana in the car's trunk with an estimated street value of $12,500.
Oregon State Police served a search warrant at a room at a Timbers Motel in Eugene, which netted a loaded handgun and marijuana.
Police arrested the room's occupant, Falk Marria, 35, of Nevada City, Calif. on charges of possession of a controlled substance.
Byrd and Melvin were set to appear in Marion County Circuit Court and Marria is scheduled to appear in Lane County Circuit Court.
