Forest Grove, Oregon - Forest Grove Fire and Rescue, along with the Forest Grove Police Department, responded to a house fire at 1:53 a.m. this morning. Upon arrival they found the residence, located at 2235 Laurel Street, engulfed in flames.

A Forest Grove police officer attempted to rescue an elderly female from a bathroom, but was unable to make entry because of the flames in her home. The woman, identified as Velvalee Long, died in the fire. Her husband escaped the fire with his two teen-age grandsons.

One of the boys was transported to the Burn Unit at Emmanuel Hospital for treatment of burns to his hands. The last fire in Forest Grove resulting in death occurred in 1998.
