HILLSBORO, Oregon -- After police were called on a report of a suicidal person Thursday a Hillsboro police officer was shot in the shoulder. Hillsboro Police Department spokesman Mike Rouches said a therapist called police around 5 p.m. and said a patient was upset and causing problems at a home near 661 N. First St. When officers arrived they were confronted by Sepp Tokanaga, also known as Michael Smith, whom Rouches said made threats at the officers. During the confrontation, police said, some sort of explosive device was aimed at the officers. "I saw what looked like a bomb come out of the house and then it blew up," said Kevin Marbel. "Then it was like 20 gunshots fired."

Tokanaga opened fire and shot at the officers. Justin Morris, 33, was shot in the shoulder then other officers returned fire and Tokanaga was shot in the leg. "I heard several gunshots of different caliber, one being higher and then second being heavier," said neighbor Charles Jordan. "It sounded like three shots followed by four shots." Officer Morris was taken to Legacy Emanuel Hospital for surgery and has since been released.

Tokanaga was taken to OHSU and is also expected to recover. Police they found ammunition and grenades at the home which led prompted a call to the bomb squad to deal with the explosives. Marijuana was also found growing in the back yard of the home. Detectives from Hillsboro, Tigard and Washington County are investigating the shooting.
