PORTLAND, Oregon - On Saturday July 28, 2018, at about 6pm., police responded to an assault at Northeast 6th Avenue and East Burnside Street. The victim told police he was hit in the head with a handgun and that the suspect also fired a shot during the encounter.
Officers and medical personnel arrived in the area and contacted the victim, a 34-year-old male, who was suffering from a head injury. The victim was transported by ambulance to a Portland hospital for treatment to a non-life-threatening injury.
The victim told police that he was seated in a vehicle when the suspect approached him, broke out the window of the car and hit him in the head with a handgun. The victim told police that the suspect also fired a short then left the area. The victim told police that he knows the suspect and that he lives in a tent in the area of Northeast 7th Avenue and Everett Street, also associated to a white pick-up truck. Based on information learned at the scene, officers believe this incident was a dispute over money.
Officers searched the area but did not locate the suspect or the pick-up truck. At approximately 4:15 a.m., officers located the suspect vehicle near Southeast 8th Avenue and Grant Street and found the suspect in a nearby tent. The suspect was taken into custody without incident and a handgun was seized as evidence.
The suspect, 57-year-old Juan Lopez, was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on a charge of Assault in the Second Degree. He will be arraigned in Multnomah County Circuit Court on Monday July 30, 2018.
