SALEM, Oregon - Captain Bill Fugate is under criminal investigation by the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office. Fugate is the chief spokesman for the Oregon State Police.
The sheriff's office reported receiving an anonymous tip Tuesday evening regarding Captain Bill Fugate. Deschutes County Sheriff Shane Nelson says his office began the investigation late Tuesday after receiving the tip. Nelson provided no details about the investigation, but said it has nothing to do with Fugate's conduct while on the job. There has been no indication of the nature of the investigation or what charges could be filed against Captain Fugate.
The tip came through the county's 911 dispatch center Tuesday night. Fugate, an 11-year veteran of the force, was placed on administrative leave the next day, OSP Superintendent Travis Hampton said in a statement.
The sheriff's office released no additional details.
"We are in the beginning stages of this investigation and want to balance transparency with our duty to protect the integrity of the investigation," said Nelson in a statement.
Captain Fugate declined to comment when reached by The Oregonian/OregonLive. Before being placed on leave, he had been serving as the state police's top public information officer as well as the agency's legislative coordinator.
