Albany Woman Killed in a Pedestrian Crash near Newport

On August 25,2017 at approximately 3:45pm, Oregon State Police troopers responded a fatal traffic crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian occurred on US Highway 101 near milepost 147.

The pedestrian, identified as Deborah L. Samples, age 64, from Albany, attempted to cross the highway with oncoming traffic in both directions and was struck by a southbound 1999 Subaru Legacy driven by Joan Barry-Gertz, age 73, of Waldport. Samples was treated for critical injuries at the scene. She was transported by ambulance to Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital and then by air transported to Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland for additional treatment. Samples died at Legacy Emanuel Hospital due to the extent of her injuries. Barry-Gertz was not injured and is cooperating with the investigation.

The Oregon State Police responded was assisted by the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, the Newport Police Department, Newport Fire and Rescue, Pacific West Ambulance, Life Flight Helicopter Service, and ODOT. No photos will be released of this crash.
