Man Steals city vehicle from parks employee, runs from cops

FOREST GROVE, Oregon - On Friday at 7 AM, a City of Forest Grove employee was approached by a man, later identified as 19 y/o Jose Manuel Bernabe-Hernandez, at Talisman Park near Willamina Avenue regarding obtaining employment with the City. Bernabe-Hernandez became belligerent with the employee before running for the employee's nearby City parks vehicle. Bernabe-Hernandez got into the vehicle and drove away at a high rate of speed. The truck was later spotted and followed in the Verboort Road and Hwy 47 area driving recklessly and crossing into oncoming traffic. Police pursued then terminated for safety of the public due to Bernabe-Hernandez's erratic driving. The truck was last seen in the area of Cornelius-Schefflin Road heading towards the North Plains area. Officers identified a passenger in the vehicle as 19 y/o Jonathan Varona-Nieto.

The City truck is a white 2016 Ford F-250 extra cab pick-up, bearing Oregon plate E266544 and displaying "City of Forest Grove" markings on the doors. (Attached is picture of actual truck following theft and another of similar truck close up.)

If anyone observes the vehicle or suspect(s), they are asked to call 911 and not approach the subjects.

At this time Forest Grove Police has probable cause for Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Reckless Driving and Elude for Bernabe-Hernandez and Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle for Varona-Nieto.
