PORTLAND, Oregon - On Wednesday June 28, 2017, at 4:50 p.m., East Precinct officers responded to Southeast 122nd Avenue and Stark Street on the report that a man was climbing a utility pole on the northeast corner of the intersection.
PGE crews were able to shut down the power and retrieve the man's body from the power lines at approximately 6:30 p.m. Medical personnel confirmed that the man was deceased.
The Oregon State Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy on Thursday to determined the man's identity and official cause of death.
As officers were responding, additionally callers reported that the man was throwing items from his pockets and that he was pulling at wires and other items attached to the pole.
Officers arrived a few minutes after being dispatched and saw that the man was likely being electrocuted as he dangled approximately halfway up the pole.
Portland General Electric (PGE) and Portland Fire & Rescue are in consultation and responding to the scene to safely get the man down from the wires. At this point, he is not showing any signs of life.
The intersection is closed to all traffic and area residents and businesses may experience a power outage as crews work to safely address this situation. People in the area should be aware that the scene is visually graphic and may be upsetting to witness.
