Hillsboro OR - At 1:00 this afternoon Hillsboro Fire Department Station 1 was dispatched to a residential fire on the 1600 block of SE Fire Grove Loop. Additional fire units were soon added to the response as the 9-1-1 dispatcher received additional information from the caller.
Upon the arrival of Engine 1 Firefighters found smoke coming from the open door of an attached two car garage. Once inside the garage they discovered active fire in the back corner. The fire was igniting fireworks stored in the same area. The fire was extinguished within six minutes of their arrival. Firefighters from Engine 1 and Truck 5 then turned their attention to the attic space above the garage to insure that the fire had not spread.
One adult female and two children were in the house when the fire started. The resident told investigators that as she was nearing the door from the house to the garage she heard what sounded like something burning and smelled smoke. She opened the door and saw fire in the back corner. She immediately went back inside, gathered the two children and evacuated through the front door. The next door neighbor reported the fire to 9-1-1.
Hillsboro Fire Investigator Charles Marble determined that the fire was caused by smoker's carelessness. No damage estimate is available at this time.
Twenty-three Hillsboro Fire personnel responded to the fire. No firefighter or resident injuries were reported.
The Hillsboro Fire Department reminds everyone that as we move closer to the July 4th celebration only purchase fireworks that are legal in Oregon and be sure store them in a safe area.
