Cowlitz County, WA- Firefighters from Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue and Longview Fire Department responded to a structure fire Wednesday morning at 4:11 in the 100 block of Yelton Drive.

A sleeping resident heard an explosion and saw heavy fire on the side of the house; she then notified her mother to get out of the house and called for help. Fire crews arrived to find multiple cars on the left side of the house on fire and heavy smoke coming from the residence; the adult daughter and her elderly mother were out of the home. The husband was notified at work and later arrived. Firefighters extinguished the fire in 45 minutes and checked for extension into the attic of the single story home.

Three fire engines, a brush engine, and an ambulance from American Medical Response (AMR), and two chief officers responded to the fire. Cowlitz County PUD also responded to the incident. The elderly woman was treated and transported by AMR to Peace Health St. John's Medical Center for smoke inhalation. Four family pets (three cats and a dog) perished in the fire.

No other injuries were reported. American Red Cross will be supporting the family with food, shelter, and other resources as needed. Fire damage to three vehicles, a motorcycle, a shed, and the home is estimated at $100,000, according to fire officials. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
