This morning a driver traveling northbound on I-5 near Jantzen Beach who was weaving in and out of traffic, ran into a vehicle on the side of the road with a flat tire. The driver scraped the car but 28-year-old Amal Shariff of Seattle, Washington had two small children in the back seat. The children were crying when police stopped the driver near the I-5 bridge.

Police suspected the mother might be drunk. She was asked to get out of the car and began to place her under arrest. Police say Shariff struggled and struck an officer in the face with her elbow before officers were able to place her into handcuffs.

Shariff was taken to the Multnomah County Jail on charges of Assaulting a Police Officer (two counts), Resist Arrest, Recklessly Endangering Another Person (two counts), Reckless Driving, and Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants.

The children were taken into protective custody and turned over to the Department of Human Services.
