FLORENCE, Oregon - A man has died and two Florence police officers were assaulted Monday in a fight with a 40-year-old man they were trying to release from the Florence jail. The man accused of assaulting the officers later died at PeaceHealth Peace Harbor Medical Center in Florence.
There was no immediate reason given as to why the prisoner victim became aggressive as he was being released or the apparent cause of death.
Lt. Cari Boyd, an Oregon State Police spokeswoman, said troopers and medics arrived for the two injured officers when the male prisoner became non-responsive and was taken to Peace Harbor Hospital and was pronounced dead.
The name of the prisoner who died had not been released at the time of this news story.
The two Florence officers were taken to a hospital for their injuries. Both are employed by Florence Police Department. Officer Ken Larson has been with Florence PD for 24 years and Stephanie Sansom has been employed for one year.
Authorities have not reported the nature of the injuries to the two officers or their conditions.
The Lane County District Attorney's Office has activated the Interagency Deadly Force Investigation Team to investigate.
The district attorney's office said no additional information would be released until that investigation is completed sometime next week.
