June 20, 2016--Washington County Sheriff's Deputies arrested a man after allegedly assaulting another person with a machete who had been sleeping in a residence. On June 20, 2016 at about 3:43 a.m., Sheriff's Deputies serving the City of Cornelius, were called to the 1800 block of South Oleander Lane in Cornelius concerning an assault. Sheriff's Deputies were told a man was attacked with a machete while he was sleeping.
The Sheriff's Deputies arrived and found a 28 year-old resident of the house had been attacked with a machete while he was sleeping on the couch. Sheriff's Deputies saw the man's arm had several deep lacerations apparently caused by a sharp object with significant force. The victim told Sheriff's Deputies he was able to pick up a steel pipe to fend off his attacker. He said he struck the man in the head with the pipe initiating an end to the attack. The victim was treated and released from the hospital.
The suspect, Shawn Kinney, 28, from Forest Grove, was also located at the house. He had a laceration to his head with what appeared to be a blunt weapon. Mr. Kinney was treated at a local hospital and released to Sheriff's Deputies. His current booking photo is very graphic so the attached booking photo is from earlier this month.
Shawn Paul Kinney was arrested and lodged in the Washington County Jail where he was charged with First Degree Assault and Unlawful Use of a Weapon. He is held on $250,000 bail.
This incident is still under investigation as to the reason for the attack. Sheriff's Deputies are asking for the public's assistance with additional information that may shed light on this case.
