WEST LINN - On June 9, 2016 at about 10:40 pm officers from the West Linn Police Department responded to a single vehicle crash involving a car that had collided with the 7-11 at Cedaroak Drive and Willamette Drive. Initial reports were that a person was seen fleeing from the car after the impact. When officers arrived they found a 1990 Honda that had backed into the side of the store and crashed through the wall.
Officer's quickly learned that the subject seen running was actually a witness and that the crash was actually a runaway vehicle. The investigation revealed that the owner of the Honda had just parked at the Walmart across the street. Just after he exited the car and entered the store the car began to role backward picking up speed. The car left the parking lot and crossed Willamette Drive. It then jumped the curb at the Chevron Station and glanced off a pole and careened across Cedaroak Drive and into the 7-11, some 350 feet away. Several witness saw the car approaching and after the crash one of them ran across the street to Walmart to try and locate the owner. The Impact caused extensive damage to the side of the masonry block building.
"The parking brake was set so it boils down to a mechanical failure" said Officer Sam Tooze. Sergeant Blain McKean added, "It's incredibly lucky that the car did not collide with traffic on Willamette Drive and that it did not hit a gas pump at the Chevron, could have been far worse".
Police assisted with exchanging information and no citations were issued.
