On June 8th, 2016, at 5:34pm, officers from the Camas Police Department responded to the intersection of NE 3rd Avenue/NE Hayes Street for a report of a two-vehicle traffic collision. Witnesses advised that one of the involved parties was unconscious.
Upon arrival at the scene, it was determined that a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer being driven by 76 year-old Sol Claypool , was northbound on NE Hayes Street when it collided with a 1997 Ford Escort being driven eastbound on NE 3rd Avenue by 85 year-old, Viola Jessett.
Viola's husband, William "Bill" Jessett was in the passenger seat of her vehicle and was non-responsive when units arrived. Members of the Camas-Washougal Fire Department attempted CPR but were unable to revive Jessett and he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Claypool was not injured as a result of the collision. She remained on scene and cooperated with investigators.
Camas Police were assisted by members of the Clark County Traffic Homicide Unit.
NE 3rd Avenue was closed for over 3 hours due to the collision but is now reopened.
At this time, the investigation is still ongoing and no determination has been made regarding criminal charges.
