Man lights himself on fire

PORTLAND, Oregon - On Sunday at 12:12 p.m., North Precinct officers received a call of a possible restraining order violation in the 3700 block of N.E. 114th Ave. Officers from both North and East Precinct responded to the call. When officers arrived they attempted to contact the subject.

Preliminary reports indicate that as the began to attempt to speak with him, the subject began pouring gasoline on himself. The primary officer immediately requested an Enhanced Crisis Intervention Team (ECIT) officer and the also asked for medical. An ECIT officer had arrived as cover and was immediately available. Unfortunately the subject was not responding to the officers and lit himself.

Officers were able to get a hose and extinguish the fire on the individual. The officers were also able to quickly get him medical attention. Despite these efforts, the individual has suffered life threatening injuries from the flames. He has been transported to an area hospital for treatment.

The joint Portland Fire/Police Arson investigation team is responding to assist with the investigation. The investigation into this incident is in the beginning stages.
