PORTLAND, Oregon - On Saturday afternoon, Portland Fire & Rescue was notified that an off-duty fire inspector was arrested in connection with a single vehicle crash in Clackamas County. The initial report indicates that this crash involved a city owned vehicle assigned to Inspector James Morelli.
Fire Inspector Morelli was arrested on suspicion of Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants (Alcohol). Morelli was booked into Clackamas County Jail this morning.
Morelli is a 26 year veteran of Portland Fire & Rescue and is currently assigned to the Fire Marshal's Office at the rank of Fire Inspector.
PF&R officials will be conducting a thorough investigation of the incident, however it is important that we allow the legal process to move forward appropriately.
We are relieved to report there were no serious injuries in connection with this incident. The safety of our citizens is Portland Fire & Rescue's highest priority and this situation will be addresses with this in mind. The nature of this arrest will prohibit the operation of a publicly owned vehicle by Inspector Morelli while this investigation is ongoing
