On Saturday, Washington County Deputies serving the City of Cornelius responded to an armed robbery and two suspects were taken into custody.
Saturday May 7, 2016 at 4:12 a.m., Washington County Deputies responded to N 7th Avenue in Cornelius on a report of an armed robbery. Two suspects demanded money, assaulted the victim and fled the scene. Responding deputies quickly located one of the suspects and identified him as Johnathan Zurita-Veladiz, age 20 of Cornelius. The second suspect eluded the deputies.
During the investigation, deputies learned a gun was involved in the robbery and continued their search for the second suspect. At 9:49 a.m., deputies located the second suspect, identified as Luis Rios, age 19 of Portland inside a residence on N. Davis Street. After negotiating with the second suspect for about an hour, he surrendered to the deputies.
Luis Rios has been lodged in the Washington County Jail on a Parole Violation and is facing charges of Robbery and Assault.
Johnathan Zurita-Veladiz has been lodged in the Washington County Jail on charges of Robbery I and Assault III.
The victim's mother wanted to share the following statement, "The community worked together with the police to take the suspects into custody."
