Apparently the only thing more popular than Sen. Bernie Sanders at a Bernie Sanders rally is a little bird at a Bernie Sanders rally.
That was the case anyway during a Sanders' Friday campaign event in Portland, Oregon, when a bird landed first on the stage and then on Sanders' podium, right next to his microphone.
The crowd went wild, leaping from their seats to cheer.
(As The Oregonian noted, the sketch series Portlandia, set in the city, had made a gag out of the phrase, "Put a bird on it!")
Sanders, 74, deviated from his stump speech as he eyed the tiny bird, who stood next to him for a few moments before flying away.
"I think there may be some symbolism here," Sanders said. "I know it doesn't look like it, but that bird is really a dove asking us for world peace. No more wars!"
