KEKIZER, Oregon - A Target Shopper owes her life to the fast thinking crew at the Keizer Station Target Store this evening after collapsing in cardiac arrest. At 6:35 p.m. a 72 year old shopper was using a motorized shopping scooter, when a witness saw her collapse, and called 9-1-1. Store employees used radio communications to share information and a medical emergency alert message was sent out to all employees. Store Team Leader,(Manager) Brad Dickerson (37) and Austin Snelling (24) responded to the victim who was face down in cardiac arrest. After turning the woman over, Snelling began CPR, while Dickerson brought and applied the Automatic Heart Defibrillator (AED) to her chest. The Defibrillator advised that a defibrillation (shock) was needed and Dickerson activated the life saving device. Dickerson began CPR again, and the woman's color improved and she awoke to the men standing over her. Still not done assisting her, they directed other employees to provide blankets and pillows for both her dignity and her comfort. When Keizer Fire District Paramedic personnel arrived, she was conscious and speaking with emergency response personnel. The woman was shopping alone in the store at the time, and the whole event lasted six minutes, from the time 9-1-1 was called, to the arrival of Paramedics. Keizer Fire District praised the fast response and training of the Target Store Employees as hero's, who clearly saved this woman's life tonight, after being tested, in this most dire, medical emergency.

Early activation of the 9-1-1 system, CPR, Automatic Defibrillators in public places, and trained employees, are all part of the emergency medical system (EMS). This is the "Chain of Survival" for victims of cardiac arrest. Although there will never be a routine emergency for saving a life, the best means of handling such an emergency, is to be prepared for it.
