LONGVIEW, Washington - At 3:04 PM Longview Fire and Cowlitz 2 Fire and Rescue were dispatched to a fire located at 150 E Mill, Longview WA; EGT Grain Terminal. The initial dispatch report advised responding fire units that a grain bucket elevator with fire at approximately 4-6 stories off the ground. Responding fire crews could see smoke from the top of the grain elevator, nearly 200 feet off the ground.
Fire crews from Longview and Cowlitz 2 Fire and Rescue worked in coordination with EGT staff to bring the fire under control after approximately two hours, attacking the fire from multiple locations including floor two, floor eight, floor nine, and from the top of the elevator.
The fire was contained to a single grain bucket elevator, and did not extend beyond the elevator housing. Heat and pressure inside the housing caused the activation of three explosion relief panels. These explosion panels are specifically engineered to release heat and pressure during fire conditions to reduce the possibility of an explosion.
Fires in elevated structures like high rises and grain elevators are exponentially challenging to fight fire in. Access is difficult and arduous, and the number of firefighters required to fight fires increases dramatically. A second alarm was called for additional staffing, summonsing a total of 27 firefighters to the scene.
Once the fire was under control fire crews turned the scene over to EGT staff for repair and maintenance. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time. The EGT grain bucket elevator has a redundant system and EGT is expected to suffer only a slight operational delay. There were no injuries reported by firefighters or EGT staff.
