Jim Smith To Host The 57th Grammy Awards

by Sandra Blodget - The Oregon Herald Sunday February 8, 2015    3:01 PM

Okay, who the hell is Jim Smith? Well, it's hip-hop artist and actor LL Cool J, aka, James Todd Smith, of course. He'll be hosting the 57th Annual Grammy Awards tonight with dozens of musical performances and plenty of playful fashion to your television, straight from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

The Awards are airing live and LL Cool J is hosting the show tonight on CBS for the fourth year in a row, bringing his signature sense of laid-back charm to the ceremony. While at a dinner he was co-hosting with fellow TV personality Michael Strathan and Hennessy, the Grammy host sat down and talked about everything from co-producing the show to refusing to watch how he did.

The biggest night in music is as much known for its performances as its awards, and this year will be full of original duets including Katy Perry, Ariana Grande, Adam Levine, Miranda Lambert, Sam Smith, Madonna and more. LL Cool J says, "We have Kanye West with Rihanna, and Sir Paul McCartney together. We have Tony Bennett with Lady Gaga.

"The Grammys have historically brought in veteran acts to either play new material or to play older material, but we have younger acts joining them," Senior Correspondent at Billboard Magazine Phil Gallo told NBC'S Joe Fryer for TODAY.

As for the awards, Billboard Magazine editor-at-large Joe Levy told TODAY's Lester Holt and Erica Hill that it's going to be Sam Smith's night. Tied with both Beyoncé and Pharrell for the most nominations of the night (six total), Sam Smith could take home some of the biggest awards of the ceremony. "I think it's going to be a big night for Sam Smith," Levy said. "I feel confident saying we'll be talking about Sam Smith tomorrow morning."

Branded as "Music's Biggest Night", should hit your TV set tonight with lots of energy, and it brings a cast of characters pulled straight from the top of the charts.

Gone are the days when it was easy to accuse the Grammys of being a few years out of step, eager to strap laurels on aging artists at the expense of the year's hot properties. Tonight will put the spotlight on the undisputed heavyweights of the pop zeitgeist — stars such as Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Sam Smith, Katy Perry and Meghan Trainor — as the Grammys ride the recent momentum of viral buzz and ratings success.

That's not to say tonight's 31/2-hour event in L.A. won't have a little something for everybody. On a show where the live performances have become nearly as prominent as the awards themselves, the lineup is crowded with artists from across the spectrum, including Madonna, AC/DC, Miranda Lambert, Sia, Usher, Katy Perry, Juanes and Eric Church.
